Donald Richie (born in Ohio, 1924) has lived in Japan for more than 50 years, and — in scores of books and essays – has been the most acute Western observer and commentator on its changing cultural and social scene. Widely regarded as the world’s foremost expert on Japanese Film, he has also written on a wide variety on Japanese subjects (from pachinko and gardens, to Godzilla and Zen), besides also making his own films, and organizing Japanese film series and director retrospectives worldwide. „Sneaking In: Donald Richie’s Life in Film,“ focuses on Richie’s multi-faceted involvement in Japanese film as both filmmaker, film critic and historian, and friend of many of its creative luminaries. „Sneaking In“ also offers the viewer a portrait or Richie’s passionate views on Japanese film: its glorious past, some little known masters, and his prognostications of its future.
